The GOLDSTON Family
of Chatham County, Goldston, N. C.
Updated 01/01/2003
From the files of Kathleen Goldston Stout, Goldston, NC, Dec. 28, 2002. We forgot to ask Kathleen who wrote the following history… maybe some of you family friends might know.
From the Virginia Historical Magazine, Vol. 2, Page 358: A will of Edward Goldston, Limehouse, the Parish of Stepney Middlesex, dated July 8, 1663, proven in 1663. His wife, Susannah – two brothers, Thomas and Charles and four sisters; three sons, Anthony, John, and William. This family is shown by public works to be lineally descendants from Henry 6th of England, through his daughter Margaret, Queen of Scotland. (Note spelling of Goldston, 312 years ago, the same as we spell our name today in the year of 1975.)
The above information and the following has been obtained by Herbert Goldston, born 11/6/1897 died 8/10/1980 since his first history of the Goldston Family from Chatham County, NC, compiled from 1950 to 1955.
In compliance with the will left by the original William Goldston (died 1808) the executors met in November, 1815, and divided the land between his sons, William Goldston, Jr., when he became of age, and Joseph John (Jack) Goldston, born 1800. (This was probably how James M. Black, in his LSD history, named Joseph John (Jackson) Goldston. Joseph John was really a Jr. nicknamed Jack. His father was known as "Joe".) This establishes that William Goldston, Jr., was (in) 1815- 21 years- Born 1794, died 1893. After he was deeded his above tract, within two years he deeded it to John Harris of Chatham County, NC, for reasons unknown he was named William Goldston Harris.
In 1968 Herbert Goldston (B 11-6-1897) interviews Bob Harris in his home which was in the forks of Haw River. “Bob Harris was then 90 years old. He advised me that his grandfather (was) O. E. Harris. His mother was Agnes Peoples, sister to Hugh Peoples of Siler City.”
The above William Goldston Harris married Anna R. Rives 2-28-1828, born 2-14-1810, sister to her brother’s wife, Joseph John (Jack) Goldston, born 1800, who married Martha K. Rives around 1821 and lived near Bear Creek, north of Goldston, NC.
The children of William Goldston Harris and wife Anna Rives, all of Chatham County, were as follows:
1-C Oscar E. Harris born 1829
2-C Robert E. Harris b 1831
3-C Martha E. Harris,. B 1834
4-C Lydia M. Harris, b 1837
5-C Frances S. Harris, b 1841
6-C Cornelius S. Harris, b 1844
7-C Catherine S. Harris, b 1846
Shown on paged 67 & 68 in history of Tysors by W. Harold Broughton as follows: on page 68 the original William Goldston (d 1808) deeded 400 acres land 5-13-1780 signed William & wife Sarah Goldston. On page 67 shows Sarah Stewart, daughter of Capt. Charles Stewart of the Revolutionary War. This could be the wife of the original William Goldston, the time and place where both families were living.
In the settlement of the estate dated August, 1821, evidently after Elizabeth’s mother passed., shows Aaron Evans and his wife, Elizabeth Goldston which establishes they were married sometime before that.
In the Book of Wills – Book B, Page 156 of Chatham County, NC, in the Clerk’s Office, dated 24th day of January, 1829, the will of Aaron Evans, which he gives and bequeaths to his wife Elizabeth Goldston Evans 1/3 part of land which I now live including the dwelling herein and all other appurtenances thereto. He named two sons, John Evans and James Evans, also 2 daughters; Sarah (named after her grandmother, wife of the original William Goldston (d 1808)) and the other daughter Eliza).
