The GOLDSTON Family

of Chatham County, Goldston, N. C.

Last updated 01/03/2003

Allan Goldston’s comments appear in red.

Hubert Goldston’s history appears in blue.

History copied from Black’s book Gholston Families in America, published 1959, are in black text.

FAMILY OF JOSEPH JOHN JACKSON GOLDSTON AND MARTHA K. RIVES.  (Error, proved by grave stone below.  I think that George E. Rives memory faltered when he named Joseph John Jackson Goldston in his history presented at the 1st family reunion in July, 1950. And I believe that James Black relied on this history and repeated the mistake in his 1959 Goldston book.  There was a Joseph John Jackson from Chatham County who graduated from UNC in 1838, not related to the Goldston family)

Joseph John Goldston

Born Oct. 18, 1800

Died Sept. 23, 1874

Aged 73 years, 11 months, 5 days

(This stone has the carved handshake on the top portion and was made in Greensboro)

Martha K. grave plainly shows her to be the wife of J. J. Goldston, Sr., as written on the stone.

JOSEPH JOHN JACKSON GOLDSTON, son of William Goldston and Sarah, his wife, was born Chatham County, N. C., about 1805.  He was living with his family in Chatham County in 1850 where he was a prosperous farmer.  He was married to Martha K. Rives, born March 10, 1806, in Chatham Co., N. C., a daughter of Edwards Rives and Mary Ann Alston.  Edwards Rives made his last will and testament in Chatham County on March 19, 1839, and it was probated in February, 1840.  (See Appendix).  Joseph John Jackson Goldston and Martha K. Rives were married November 15, 1821.  Joseph John built a home on the banks of Bear Creek where  his son, Andrew Jackson and his family lived.  A. J. was killed on the farm in a rifle accident.  His son Robert Lee Goldston and his family lived there until the family moved to Wake Forest about 1930.

                                                                Children:

1.      William Edwards Goldston, born in Chatham County, died young.  Named after his mother’s father, Edwards Rives, William E. (age 23) drowned while swimming in Bear Creek and is buried in the original Goldston Family Cemetery on the “Old Road” going past their home place.

2.      2. Joseph John Goldston Jr., Born in Chatham County, N. C., about 1824,  was surveyor of Chatham County in 1850.  He married Virginia K. Bynum. Nickname Jennie.

3.      3. Thomas Jefferson Goldston, born in Chatham Co., N. C., about 1827 (aged 22 in 1850); married Mary Elizabeth Guthrie.  Born 3/16/1848, died 9/5/1871, married Martha E. Guthrie, born 1828, died 1876, 9 children, then married Annie E. Guthrie, born 12/8/1836, died 1899.  She was sister to his first wife, Martha.  Annie was married to Edward Harris the first time, then to the above in 1883.  The home place of Thomas Jefferson Goldston is located one mile north of Goldston on the Goldston-Pittsboro highway.  He is buried in the Goldston Cemetery, Goldston, NC, and beside him his second wife is buried.  His first wife is buried at the old Goldston Farm on the banks of Bear Creek.

4.      Mary Goldston, born in Chatham Co., N. C., about 1829, married Marian Green.  Mary Alston Goldston born 3/13/1830, died 1885, married John Marion Green, born 1824, died 1907, of Beaumont, NC.  They afterwards moved to Randolph County where they lived and died and are buried at Parks Cross Road Church of that county, 8 children.  Two of their children, Martha Bell Green, born 1849, died 1850, and Joseph John Green, born Nov. 6, 1859, died Nov. 21, 1862 are buried at the original Goldston Family Cemetery on the banks of Bear Creek. It is assumed they lived there for a few years before moving a short distance away to the Beaumont Place.

Black writes:

FAMILIES OF JOSEPH JOHN GOLDSTON AND VIRGINIA R. BYNUM

JOSEPH JOHN GOLDSTON, son of Joseph John Jackson (error, should be Joseph John Goldston Sr. as proved by gravestones.)  Goldston and Martha K. Rives, was born about 1824 in Chatham County. He was aged 25 years in 1850 and at that time was County Surveyor of Chatham County.  He served with distinction in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War (I haven't seen any document that Joseph John served in the Civil War.) and was one of the founders of (the town) Goldston, Chatham County, N. C., along with his brothers Thomas Jefferson Goldston and Andrew Jackson Goldston.  He was a prominent planter, business man and citizen of his county.  He was married to Virginia R. Bynum, daughter of Mark Bynum of Chatham County.  Mark Bynum made his last will and testament on February 3, 1892, in which he named his daughter, Virginia R. Goldston, and his son-in-law Joseph John Goldston.

In 1879 Joseph John Goldston was a member of the State House of Representatives.

Joseph John Goldston Jr. made his last will and testament on June 1, 1897, and it was probated May 16, 1913, and in the administration, all of the heirs are listed.

Children:

1.      J. W. GOLDSTON, of Chatham Co., N. C.

2.      WALTER L. GOLDSTON, of Chatham Co., N. C., married Valley Gilmore of Chatham County, NC, daughter of Stephen and Eliza Gilmore of Chatham County, N. C.  Stephen Gilmore made his last will and testament on February 22, 1902, and mentioned his daughter Valley Goldston, wife of Walter Goldston (see Appendix).  He was an executor to his father’s will.

3.      JAMES E. GOLDSTON, of Chatham County, N.C., one of the executors of his father’s will.

4.      JOSIE ELIZA GOLDSTON, of Chatham County, N.C.; married about 1896, Jarvis Eugene Rives.

5.      EMMA E. GOLDSTON, of Chatham Coo., N.C., married T. W. Moses.

6.      SARAH A GOLDSTON, of Chatham co., N. C., married Dr. W. M Burns.
