Allan Goldston's recollection of watching an auction by Johnny and Herbert was in the late 30's.  In the auctions I attended with my Dad, I remember that they would alternate in the auctioneering dialog without breaking process.  While one was auctioning, the other would do some little sleight of hand tricks with a card or something.

My father was very proud of Johnny & Herbert and I often heard him bragging to friends.
